Providing nutrition and hope to children from the medical field

Introducing the United Nations World Food Programme

医療の現場から、子どもたちに栄養と希望を 国連WFPのご紹介

As of 2023, up to approximately 757 million people worldwide will be facing hunger, equivalent to one in 11 people of the world. In recent years, the number of hungry people has fallen to levels seen around 2005, and factors contributing to the worsening situation include conflict, heavy rains, floods, droughts caused by climate change, and economic crises.

To save the poor and vulnerable from hunger, the United Nations WFP provides support in two areas: "Saving Hunger" and "Saving the Future," with the goal of "Zero Hunger."

A dream nurtured by school lunches

[Example of the effect of support on children]

Sri Lanka experienced a 26-year civil war until 2009. The school building was destroyed during the conflict, but a new building was completed after the conflict ended, and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) began providing school meals. When we first met Nidelsen in 2010, he was a boy who loved his school lunches.
When they met again six years later in 2016, Nidelsen had grown to the point where he spoke of his dream of studying hard and becoming a doctor in the future. Nidelsen's mother said, "Thanks to the school lunches, he has become more proactive in both his studies and play."
Then, in 2021, WFP's Sri Lanka office contacted Nidelsen due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. Nidelsen's goals had become even more concrete, and he had grown into a hardworking young man with the aim of going to university to become an accountant. WFP's school meal support is nurturing hope for the future all over the world.

Message from the Japan Association for the World Food Programme

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) aims to break the cycle of hunger and malnutrition, realize a world without hunger, and build a sustainable future where people can live in peace. However, WFP is currently facing serious funding shortages around the world, forcing it to suspend or reduce many of its aid activities. Food aid not only saves lives, but is also an important means of achieving food security, global stability, and above all, peace. Your support is a step towards changing the future. We sincerely ask for your cooperation in this important mission.
